I am so blown away by Bastien Dubois' short! It is a really amazing! It reminds me of my travels through Central America and the Caribbean. It is so beautiful, one of those things that I wished I created.

Planet ComiCon

A short while ago, I went to the Planet Comicon here in the Kansas City area. It was pretty great! Celebrity guests included: Lou Ferrigno, Helen Slater, some cartoon voice actors and some gal from Lost. Also on display were many many people dressed in costumes, mostly of Star Wars characters. Plus, a ton of artists are there for you to harass and get them to sign stuff.

My favorite part, of course, was getting to meet my Hollywood crush, Helen Slater. You may remember her as Supergirl, and also from the movie The Legend of Billie Jean. Or, you may not, depending on what decade you were born in. Ms. Slater was very nice, and quite lovely.

And my buddy Vinny got to meet his Hollywood crush:

The Hulk was kind enough to pose for this photo. He then became enraged, however, when Vinny propositioned something quite unnecessary. The Hulk then hurled 7 stormtroopers, who happened to be nearby through the window, ate a 6 foot Jawa( I didn't even know that was possible, being 6 feet and all), and bounded off saying something like,
"Never, in all Me years, have Me heard of something so ridiculous!" or something like that.

One of my favorite parts of comic conventions is getting to talk to the artists. I usually like to meet the local guys. Here are some of the creators and some of their books:

Rudy Garcia's Evolution Cop comic book is finally out. A while back I drew a pin-up with his character for this book. It is a cool book with a hot lady character and monsters, a winning combination. Rudy is an excellent sculptor, and has worked at McFarlane Toys. Check out his site for other cool stuff

Black History Illustration

A few years ago I worked for my college newspaper as an illustrator. It was challenging but I had a lot of fun.

One of the illustrations I am most proud of from that time is a double page spread I did for Black History Month. My editor asked for a 2 page illustration that could accompany the text of the story. Here it is without the text:

Spray paint fun

A few years ago, I watched an artist on a street corner paint some awesome space scenes with spray paint. I was so inspired that I went to the store and bought some spray paint and posterboard and went right home to try it out. Mine didn't turn out quite as cool looking as his did, but it was great fun.

Every once in a while, when the weather is nice, I get out some spray paint and have some fun. Here are a couple I made:

Humpbacks of the Silver Banks

A year ago this month, my wife and I took an amazing trip to snorkel with Humpback Whales. We traveled to the Dominican Republic, where we boarded a live-aboard dive yacht and sailed north to an area called The Silver Banks.

The ocean in this area is fairly devoid of sea life, and is relatively shallow, only about 100 feet deep in places. There are also many spire-like coral formations, which makes the area treacherous to boats. It also provides shelter for Humpback Whales and their calves.

Apparently the majority of the North Atlantic Humpback Whale population travel to this area once a year, for mating and calving. There are many mothers and their calves, and also rowdy groups of males.

On our first day at the Silver Banks, we spotted a mother and calf. We were allowed in the water with them, and spent quite a while snorkeling within a few feet of the calf. I managed to shoot some video, here is most of it:

The calves get about 8 feet long. It was the biggest creature I have been in the water with, so I was blown away once I looked down past the baby to see the 30+ foot mother. It was surreal, and one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

So, I am currently a student at Animation Mentor. It is a great online animation school. It is an 18-month program, broken up into 6 classes. I am beginning Class 3 this week, and I couldn't be more excited. So far, I have had an amazing time attending the school, and I have learned so much. Here are some of my assignments thus far:
